Fellowship Awards Request for Applications (RFA)

The UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCLA JCCC) is pleased to announce its Fellowship program for the academic year 2024.

The goal of the Fellowship program is to provide research funding to Post-Doctoral Scholars/Fellows, Residents and Graduate Students from all areas of cancer research, including basic, translational, and clinical and population science. Applicant should either be a permanent resident or US citizen at the time of receiving UCLA JCCC fellowship awards. Please apply accordingly. The purpose of this program is to provide funding support and guidance to fellows so they can use it to develop and submit a competitive NIH F-grant application.

RFAs Open in This Round

For Graduate Students and Residents, the program review process provides investigators with constructive feedback that will help in the preparation of applications to extramural funding agencies. Fellowship award provides up to $10,000 for one year. Only applications from individuals who have not been recipients of this UCLA JCCC fellowship award in the past will be accepted for this round.

Review criteria include:

  • Quality of the applicant’s current proposal
  • Evidence of the applicant’s independent contributions to the proposed project
  • Evidence of ability to successfully complete the project
  • Scientific mentorship plan
  • Relevance to cancer research
  • Likelihood of the research project leading to the submission of further grant applications

For Post-doctoral Fellows, the program review process provides investigators with constructive feedback that will help in the preparation of applications to extramural funding agencies. Fellowship award provides up to $30,000 for one year. Only applications from individuals who have not been recipients of a fellowship award in the past will be accepted for this round.

Review criteria include:

  • Quality of the applicant’s current proposal
  • Evidence of the applicant’s independent contributions to the proposed project
  • Evidence of ability to successfully complete the project
  • Plan for scientific mentorship and transition to becoming an independent investigator
  • Relevance to cancer research
  • Likelihood of the research project leading to the submission of an extramurally funded grant

At the conclusion of each fellowship award, the applicant must submit a short-written progress report along with a closing financial statement showing any unexpended balances to the UCLA JCCC. Additionally, the UCLA JCCC will periodically reach out to past award recipients for updates on publications, grants, etc. that developed because of this fellowship award funding.

Fellowship awards are for a one-year funding period and it is expected that recipients will fully expend all funds within that period. No cost extensions (NCEs) must be formally requested with an explanation as to the delay in the project and a detailed plan to complete the project during the NCE period. NCEs are not guaranteed.

Review Criteria

Includes the quality of the applicant’s current proposal as well as evidence of ability to do the project based on their past work. Relevance to cancer research must be clearly described. The likelihood of the research project leading to the submission of an extramurally funded grant will be a key review criterion. Written reviews will be provided to the applicant to give them feedback, and applicants may be requested to provide a formal response to prior reviewer comments during the review process. Unsuccessful applicants may address the critiques and reapply. A single committee with broad representation from the UCLA JCCC will review all applications. As noted above, only applications from individuals who have not been recipients of this UCLA JCCC fellowship award in the past will be accepted for this round.
